ENGIE and the City of Petrolina (PE) execute public lighting PPP agreement
ENGIE, the largest private-sector company in the Brazilian energy industry, active in electric energy generation, trading, and transmission, gas transportation, and energy solutions, announces the execution of a PPP agreement with the City of Petrolina (PE) for public lighting in the municipality, structured with support from the National Economic and Social Development Bank (BNDES).
Under the agreement, the Company will begin operating the city’s public lighting system. It is committed to replacing 37 light bulbs for LED equipment over a 12-month period. The agreement is for a 20-year period and provides for the modernization, expansion and maintenance of the city’s lighting infrastructure, benefitting 350 thousand.
In addition to replacing the lighting fixtures, ENGIE will implement an Operations Control Center and management systems for the city’s main thoroughfares with the purpose of saving at least 50% of the energy that the municipality’s public light consume. ENGIE will prioritize local recruitment and one of its goals is to have a base in the region to provide Public Lighting solutions to other cities that are set to engage in PPP arrangements.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
ENGIE is also to implement smart remote operation and monitoring systems for highlights and spotlights along the city’s main streets, and invest in a lighting project for monuments and tourist spots in Petrolina, a city on the banks of the São Francisco river.
“The project will provide several benefits, such as fostering the local tourism and economy, added safety and security, and improved living standards”, said Leonardo Serpa, CEO of ENGIE Soluções. “ENGIE’s purpose is to act to accelerate the transition to a carbon-neutral world, through reduced energy consumption and more sustainable solutions. This acceleration must include transforming urban centers,” Serpa emphasized.
ENGIE operates approximately 400 thousand lighting points in Brazil, in cities like Florianópolis, Joinville, Blumenau and Santos, in addition to the Uberlândia PPP, which is in its implementation phase. Globally, the company operates approximately 1.5 million lighting points.
“For us, public lighting represents a gateway into the development of smart cities in Brazil. This is due to the fact that the public lighting infrastructure, when placed under concession via a PPP agreement, may provide the groundwork for aggregating smart services,” Serpa concludes.
