ENGIE concludes work preparatory to the contract for managing the implementation of Curitiba’s public lighting, helping the city meet its carbon reduction targets

Curitiba, August 2023 – ENGIE, a leader in the generation of renewable energy, has concluded more than 50 days of activities preparatory to the implementation of the public lighting agreement in the Parana state capital, Curitiba. The operation currently has more than 100 employees, both direct and indirect, 17 vehicles, as well as an Operations Center with a daily capacity to handle 300 calls.
To ensure efficient support is given to the city’s population, 16 operational teams are to operate in three shifts, seven days a week in addition to supplying all the necessary inputs for developing activities under the contract.
The value of the products held in inventory for use in the operations is estimated at R$ 330 thousand. The acquisition of more than 60 thousand LED lamps for example will allow additional public spaces to receive modern illumination as from October.

Transition process in the city’s illumination will help carbon reduction
The focus of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between ENGIE and the City Government of Curitiba is on decarbonization and gain in energy efficiency with a view to modernization, enhanced efficiency and the expansion, operation, and maintenance of the capital’s public lighting network infrastructure.
The contract will bring significant benefits to the population and to the environment, principally because activities are beginning at a particularly critical moment.
A report published by the World Meteorological Organization in May of this year states that global temperatures are expected to reach record levels over the next five years at more than 1.5ºC above pre-industrial levels. There is a 98% probability that this period will be the hottest ever recorded.
To help ameliorate such an outcome, various initiatives are being adopted for reducing global temperatures. Curitiba was one of eight cities in Brazil which have confirmed a bold commitment: to reduce by half their carbon emissions by 2030. The state capital of Paraná is one of a group of 1,049 cities around the world that have undertaken to aggressively pursue carbon emissions reduction.
These 1,049 municipalities and local governments represent approximately 722 million people, according to C40 Cities, a global network of 100 prefectures of the leading cities worldwide which have joined to combat the climate crisis.
Together with Curitiba, among the signatories in Brazil, there are a further seven capitals: Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, São Paulo, Recife, Fortaleza, and João Pessoa. These cities are committed to executing joint initiatives for reducing emissions by at least 1.4 gigatons of carbon through 2030.
Curitiba and its sustainable target
The operational and maintenance services for the public lighting system provided by ENGIE cover approximately 160 thousand lighting fixtures in public spaces, streets, gardens, and beauty spots and beginning in July, the PPP is prioritizing energy efficiency and the use of advanced technology.
Says Marcus Cunha, Operations Director at ENGIE Soluções, “the technology to be used for public lighting will make a positive contribution to the city’s objective of reducing carbon emissions by half up to 2030 in addition to cutting electric energy consumption by a third”, highlighting that one of the partnership’s set objectives is to help Curitiba meet the targets established under the United National Sustainable Development Goals.
The SDGs are a compendium of 17 goals for guaranteeing a sustainable future for the planet on the basis of specific targets and indicators.
ENGIE is a company committed to accelerating the energy transition through the reduced consumption of energy and more sustainable solutions, thus reconciling performance and socio-environmental responsibility. With this goal in common with Curitiba, the Company is committed to maximizing the delivery of a quality service in conjunction with a system operating at its maximum capacity.
