ENGIE to allocate approximately R$ 4 million to R&D projects for analyzing climate change and its impact on the electric energy sector
ENGIE Brasil Energia has opened a Call for Proposals for financing Research and Development projects with the theme “Impacts of changes in climate and land use on the electric energy sector in Brazil”. The projects will be executed within the scope of ANEEL’s R&D Program, with execution scheduled to begin in March 2022.
Enrollments are free of charge and may be submitted online up to January 9, 2022. Researchers as well as professionals from areas related to the proposed themes which are linked to Scientific, Technological and Innovation Institutions (ICTs), including universities, as well as startups and specialized companies, are eligible for enrollment.
The proposed research must be original and unpublished, that is the theme must never have been published in periodicals, events or studies available to the consultancy market, irrespective of whether these are the authorship of the executing entity or not. Suggested lines of study are: 1) paleoclimatology; 2) future changes in the atmospheric and oceanic patterns active in South America and affecting renewable energy sources; 3) quantifying the sources of moisture for key hydrographic regions in the production of energy; 4) regional climate modeling as applied to the predictability of significant events (droughts); 5) quantification of the effect of changes in soil cover on the components of the regional hydrographic cycle. All of these with a focus on the impacts of the electric energy sector in Brazil and South America over the coming decades.
This is the first time that ENGIE has opened a public call for financing R&D projects. “Innovation and technology are fundamental tools for making the sector more efficient, accelerating the energy transition and for the solution to future problems. In the light of the current scenario, understanding climate change is essential for thinking about the future for energy generation on which society as a whole depends”, says Mario Cusatis, manager for Renewables Management at ENGIE Brasil Energia.
The call for proposals and more detail on the eligibility of the projects can be found in the ENGIE website.
