With its Salto Os\u00f3rio and Salto Santiago hydroelectric plants situated on the Igua\u00e7u River, ENGIE has been awarded Paran\u00e1 Climate Seal certification\u00a0\u00a0in the \u2018\u2019GOLD PLUS 2020\u2019\u2019 <\/strong>category. This award is made to companies located in the state of Paran\u00e1 that submit their Greenhouse Gas Emissions\u2019 Inventories for Inmetro-accredited third party verification, validating a year-on-year reduction in emissions.<\/p>\n

The seal is an initiative of the State Tourism and Sustainable Development Secretariat (Sedest) and was created with the aim of combating climate change while at the same time preparing\u00a0 Paran\u00e1-based companies for the regulatory challenges which lie ahead among which the probable introduction of some form of carbon tax. The measure is under study\u00a0 for promoting the transition to a low, more environmentally sustainable carbon economy.<\/p>\n

This is the third year that ENGIE has been successful in being awarded the Paran\u00e1 Climate Seal in the \u201cGold\u201d category and the second consecutive year in the \u201cGold Plus\u201d <\/strong>category. The award is made up of three categories: Original<\/strong>, Gold <\/strong>and Gold Plus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

ENGIE\u2019s track record in Paran\u00e1 <\/strong><\/p>\n

For more than 20 years now in Paran\u00e1, ENGIE operates in the state through the Salto Os\u00f3rio Hydroelectric Power Plant (installed capacity of 1,078 MW), municipal district of S\u00e3o Jorge d’Oeste (PR), and the Salto Santiago Hydroelectric Power Plant (installed capacity of 1,420 MW), municipal district of Saudade do Igua\u00e7u (PR), both of which are situated on the Igua\u00e7u River and acquired in an auction held in 1998. In the intervening period, the two plants have received a series of investments and today they are among the most modern hydroelectric power plants in Brazil.<\/p>\n

In the\u00a0 socio-environmental area, some of ENGIE\u2019s most important Research and Development projects are those conducted jointly with UNIOESTE for the protection of the biodiversity, especially, preservation of the ichthyofauna \u00a0endemic to the Igua\u00e7u River and the production of seedlings in the environmental vegetable garden at the Salto Os\u00f3rio plant. In the latter, approximately 70 thousand seedlings\/year are produced and planted along the banks surrounding the reservoirs and donated to the community. The company also operates the project for protecting headwater springs, more than 2 thousand of them having been preserved in the region\u2019s rural properties. Finally, ENGIE also maintains the Quedas do Igua\u00e7u Culture Center, supporting the community with socio-cultural projects.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Focus on sustainability and renewable energy <\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the benchmarks in sustainability in Brazil, ENGIE Brasil Energia has been a component of the Stock Exchange\u2019s Corporate Sustainability Stock Index (ISE) since inception in 2005. Nearly 90% of the Company\u2019s installed capacity is derived from renewable sources and with low GHG emissions, such as hydroelectric, wind, solar and biomass powered plants. \u201cIt is part of \u00a0ENGIE\u2019s daily routine to work towards the development of the country on the basis of clean energy, contributing increasingly to reducing our carbon footprint or neutralizing our clients\u2019 carbon emissions.
