Rio Open and ENGIE are to neutralize CO2 emissions generated by movement of the public at the 2022 tournament

In addition to the grand spectacles taking place on the courts and the various attractions for the public, the Rio Open presented by Claro also has a history invisible to the naked eye, but nevertheless, extremely important: Sustainability. And at the 2022 edition, this will be no different. After receiving United Nations recognition for its initiatives, the Rio Open takes one more important step in the process of neutralizing the environmental impact of its activities. In addition to the decarbonization of the event itself, in partnership with ENGIE, the largest energy generator in the Brazilian private sector, the organization of the Rio Open is also to neutralize the CO2 emissions from the movement of the attending public. At the last edition in 2020, the partners had already decarbonized the event as such, a unique initiative in the ATP 500 circuit.
To strengthen the initiative and to support the decarbonization of their participation in the event, the public must include the admission code in www.neutralizarioopen.com.br and calculate the emissions involved with transportation to the event, without additional cost or commitment.
“The greater Rio de Janeiro City biodiversity’s beauty and exuberance, more especially the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, our amphitheater for this week of events, is an inspiration to us. We want to be champions in the game of conservation, and not only to sit as spectators watching the event. For this reason, we want to go beyond holding a certified carbon neutral event. Rather, on a voluntary basis, we want to expand this scope to include the calculation of emissions associated with the public’s movement up to their arrival at the event, neutralizing them as well. For this reason, the participation of all is fundamental so that we can make the Rio Open, on each successive occasion, an even more zero carbon event”, says Marcia Casz, director of the Rio Open.
In 2020, also in partnership with ENGIE, the Rio Open offset 400 tons of carbon generated from the mounting, operation and dismantling of the event. As well as neutralizing all the domestic and international journeys by air of the athletes and technical teams, and the waste generated through carbon credits assigned by the Jirau Hydropower Plant. “Our purpose is to act to accelerating the transition to a carbon neutral economy through the reduced consumption of energy and more sustainable solutions which include the reduction and neutralization of emissions. We are very happy to again be using carbon credits generated by our power plants for making the Rio Open even more sustainable”, ENGIE’s CEO in Brazil, Maurício Bähr comments.
In partnership with ENGIE, the Rio Open has developed a Strategic Plan, the implementation of which began in 2020. The objective is that the event should be a model of environmental responsibility in line with the principal sporting events around the world. The work encompasses the neutralization of emissions arising from the holding of the tournament and the development of sustainable actions.
This commitment begins well before the event, when the principles of circularity in the waste chain are applied through three stages: reduction, recycling and reuse. An example of reduction is the reusable cups available in bars. In recycling, actions are implemented for the disposal of organic waste for composting and recyclable material for delivery to licensed cooperatives. All food and drink concessionaires must also use recyclable materials.
The principal focus is on the reuse of materials. In this context during the tournament, bracelets are made out of strings from racquets used in the competitions and on sale in the official products store, La Boutique. The event’s organization is also to dispose canvas items for use by partner cooperatives, bottle tops to be used in exchange for wheel chairs and balls and remnants of uniforms for social projects.
The event’s vision of sustainability incorporates initiatives in the social field, economic impact with the generation of jobs and income and the use of the power of sport to promote environmental awareness and conservation.
From the sporting point of view, the tournament is also known for its high standard. It is the first ATP World Tour 500 ever to be held in Brazil and forms part of a select group of 13 tournaments known as the ATP 500, one of the 22 most important events in the ATP calendar and the only one to take place in Brazil. This qualifies it as the most important annual sporting event in Rio de Janeiro and one of the three events at the ATP level played on clay together with Hamburg and Barcelona. For the 2022 version, the Top 10 duo, Matteo Berrettini and Casper Ruud, the Olympic medalist Pablo Carreño Busta and the revelation, Carlos Alcaraz have already confirmed their presence.
