Holding

Rio de Janeiro, June 17, 2019 — In line with its sustainability commitments, L´Oréal Brazil and ENGIE announced their partnership for the use of electricity from renewable sources in all L´Oréal sites in Brazil.

Wind power is generated at ENGIE’s Wind Complex in the municipality of Trairi (Ceará), and it supplies the manufacturing plants, Distribution Centers, Research Center and headquarters of L´Oréal Brazil, avoiding the emission of 7,000 tons of CO2 in the atmosphere, the equivalent of planting more than 43,000 trees.

“The issue of climate change is one of our priorities in sustainability. The decision to focus on acquiring 100% renewable energy produced in the Trairi wind farm aims to reduce the environmental impact resulting from our activities”, says An Verhulst-Santos, CEO of L´Oréal Brasil.

Maurício Bähr, CEO of ENGIE Brazil, highlights the importance of sustainability in their partnership. “The sale of energy to L’Oréal is testimony that sustainability can be both the starting and finishing point of the businesses. Partnerships such as this value and promote investments and actions that support the Sustainable Development Goals”, he said. Bähr also points out that the partnership is in line with ENGIE’s global strategy. “We are leading the energy transition to a low-carbon economy, working very closely with our customers’ energy needs and promoting continuous development”, commented the CEO of ENGIE Brazil.

This initiative is part of L’Oréal’s global sustainability commitment, Sharing Beauty With All, which has been transforming the company to make a positive impact on society and the environment. The program established sustainable development goals up to 2020, ranging from the conception of products up to the end consumer. The program has two focuses in Brazil: sustainable value chain and promoting social Protagonist roles through beauty. In the sustainable value chain pillar, one of its main missions is to achieve a low-carbon operation, aiming to reduce 60% CO2 emissions by 2020 compared to a base scenario in 2005, which has already been achieved: L’Oréal Brazil was able to reduce CO2 emissions from its industrial units by 68%, in absolute terms, in 2018 compared to 2005.

The Trairi Complex, developed by ENGIE, was a leading wind energy project that contributes to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Clean Energy, but it also contributes to the area of health and education of vulnerable students of municipalities whose initiatives are aligned with ENGIE’s purpose of offering solutions that combine energy and socio-environmental attributes. Acquiring ENGIE’s renewable energy reinforces L’Oréal Brazil’s commitment to sustainability and helps the company reach its goal of zeroing CO2 impacts related to energy consumption at its operated sites.

Strategy for reducing emissions and promoting SDGs

The power purchase and sale agreement was prepared in accordance with the guidelines of the GHG (Green House Gas) Protocol developed by the World Resource Institute and Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), in compliance with the criteria on carbon neutrality applied to the companies’ consumption of electricity.
